It’s an age old truth that a wood carver’s technique matures with time. Jiri Zmitko’s practice has with great mastery and skill.

Known as a ‘modern day Gepetto’, the Czech born wood carver has a gift for giving life to the inanimate.

Zmitko carves wooden characters which tell stories of his homeland. His puppets are magical, cheeky, ingenious and crafted with impeccable detail and elegance.

Wood Be Good is an insightful retrospective of Zmiko’s work featuring a new collection of marionette couples especially designed for UNIMA 2008. These masterpieces will be for sale.

Zmiko will also present a selection of models, design illustrations and puppets from his repertoire as a designer and maker of puppetry.

Raised in a culture famous for puppet artistry his professional career as a Puppetmaker began 18 years ago with acclaimed Czech company Drak Theatre. Zmiko is currently the Resident Puppetmaker at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre.

During exhibition opening hours there will be free opportunities for you to get amongst the wood chips and sharp chisels and see the artist at work as he demonstrates techniques of puppet making!

“He is a master of his craft... His puppets take on a life of their own.”
