“Wayang was far more than just entertainment. It reflected the eternal struggle between good and evil, between light and dark, gods and demons…”
Constantine Korsovitis’ photographs evoke the magic and mysticism of Indonesian Wayang Kulit.
The Wayang Kulit is a highly refined form of shadow puppet theatre combining religion, folklore, mysticism, philosophy, political and social commentary, music, dance and literature. This form of theatre focuses on grand stories of good versus evil expressed through the duality of man and nature, captured in a play of light and the sounds of a gamelan orchestra.
While traveling through South East Asia, Korsovitis became transfixed by the energy and vitality of Indonesian shadow puppetry. From 1999 – 2003 he made two trips to document the beauty and complexity of an ancient artform still practiced throughout the Indonesian Archipelago.
Korsovitis is currently working as a freelance photographer in Sydney, Australia, and is planning to shoot a documentary on the Indian tradition of shadow puppetry. He has exhibited extensive through Australia and across South East Asia. Artwork will be for sale.
