This classic tale of star-cross’d lovers is radically revised with a textually cheeky twist!

Theatre ANPU’s Romeo and Julia is a tragicomedy based on William Shakespeare’s 16th century masterpiece.

Non-traditional and artful scene changes create dynamic transitions on the stage. Puppet booths and still pictures are transformed into three-dimensional streets of Verona where things are not quite as they seem.

Performed by a cast of antique Czech marionettes, three actors and a musician, this production brings humour to the fore without sacrificing the pathos of the original script.

A constantly transforming visual feast.

“…hilarious, bawdy, ribald, and earthy, perhaps as Shakespeare intended. I would never have guessed that these small and relatively simple traditional marionettes could be so articulate.”
