The secrets behind an ancient art form are revealed…

Be transported to 18th century Japan by 13 puppeteers, 2 musicians and a commentator as they reveal the magic of Karakuri puppetry of the Edo period in Chiryu.

This is a rare opportunity to peek behind the scenes of puppetry and discover the mysteries of techniques passed down through the ages.

The Chiryu Karakuri Puppet Preservation Association will demonstrate the mechanics of Karakuri puppetry and perform the battle scene from The Battle of Ichinotani.

Based on one of Japan’s best known crusade stories from 800 years ago, The Battle of Ichinotani depicts the rise and fall of two families, Genji and Heike, and their fight to establish authority and power.

Performed on a decorative stage to the sounds of Joruri music, be amazed as simply crafted wooden puppets are brought to life by puppeteers manipulating 80 threads and 30 pins.

These puppets will tease and trick young and old alike as they seamlessly somersault through the air and appear to perform on their own.

The Battle of Ichinotani, performed by Chiryu Karakuri Puppetry Preservation Association is recognised by the Japanese Government as an important part of Folk Cultural Heritage.

A highlight of Carnival Day!
